Pakistan’s Navy is acquiring four MILGEM Ada corvettes from Turkey as part of a fleet expansion and modernization program to replace six Type 21 frigates acquired from the British in the 1990s. Chief of Naval Staff of Pakistan Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan jointly inaugurated the ceremony and cut the first metal plate of the naval warship at a ceremony in Istanbul. The warship will be built by the Turkish company Ada class also known as the MILGEM, MILGEM is a Turkish national warship project which build a modern combat ship for Turkish navy with indigenous anti-submarine warfare and high-seas patrol capabilities.

Addressing on the occasion President Erdogan said that the Pakistan-Turkey relations are exemplary and have great potential for collaboration in the field of defense production. Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi in his remarks termed this project as another testimony of the Pakistan-Turkey brotherhood. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish President, Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi, Chief of Naval Staff of Pakistan, Fuat Oktay, Vice President of Turkey, Hulusi Akar, Minister for National Defence of Turkey, Yaşar Guler, Chief of Turkish General Staff General, Adnan Ozbal, Commander of Turkish Naval Forces Admiral, Muhammad Sajjad Qazi, Ambassador of Pakistan to Turkey were also present on the occasion.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Defense Production had signed with Turkey’s Military Factory and Shipyard Corporation, for the procurement of four MILGEM Ada corvettes (Naval warships) for the Pakistan Navy in July 2018, According to details two of the corvettes will be built at Istanbul Naval Shipyard, while the remaining two will be constructed at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works. According to the contract, Pakistan will receive “complete transfer of technology and the transfer of intellectual property rights for the design of these ships.

The first warship will be built in 54 months from the current date, with the remaining three due within 60, 66 and 72 months, respectively. Neither Pakistan nor Turkey disclosed the real price of the deal. However a source to Pakistan Navy claimed that the Pakistani contract was approximately worth $1 billion US. The price of one Ship was worth $300 million dollars but due to some changes in the PN’s configuration the cost of the ship would come at a lower $250 million per ship.

It had added that the fourth and final ship will be “designed jointly” by Pakistan’s Maritime Technologies Complex (MTC) and (ostensibly) the original ship designer, Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Tic. A.Ş. (STM) as “the first indigenously designed and constructed frigate” in Pakistan.

MILGEM Ada class warship is 99 meter in length with a displacement of 24,00 tones and a speed of 29 nautical miles. The warships MILGEM will be equipped with an “indigenously developed missile system. This could be a hint of the PN potentially integrating the Harba dual-land-attack cruise missile (LACM) and anti-ship cruising missile (ASCM).
