Supreme Court Confirms the Death Penalty to Lashkar-e- Taiba Accused

Delhi:India’s Supreme Court has confirmed a death sentence handed down against the sole surviving gunman who helped carry out the 2008 attacks in the city of Mumbai.

Pakistan-born Mohammed Ajmal Amir Qasab was one of 10 gunmen who laid siege to Mumbai in attacks that killed more than 160 people.

He was convicted of murder, terrorist acts, and waging war on India in 2010, and sentenced to death.

Qasab claims he has not been given a fair trial.

His first appeal was rejected in 2011. He can now make a plea for clemency to India’s president.

India has blamed the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e Taiba for the attacks. Pakistani authorities have acknowledged that the assault was partly planned on its territory.
