UN intervention in Kashmir has become indispensable: JKNF

Islamabad: Reminding the UN Secretary General Mr. Antonio Gutters of his legal and moral obligations to protect the fundamental rights of the people in conflict-hit zones the senior vice chairman Jammu Kashmir National Front Altaf Hassian Wani has said that rights situation in the occupied Kashmir have deteriorated to such a level where UN intervention has become indispensable.

In a statement issued here on Friday Wani said, “Kashmiris welcome Mr. Gutter’s statement for enhanced dialogue on Kashmir and full respect for humans rights in the region but the fact is that this rhetorical repetition would hardly bring any change on the ground unless concrete steps are taken to address the critical situation in the occupied valley, which he said was reeling under the unrelenting military crackdown and communication since 5th August 2019.

Given the highly volatile situation in the restive region Wani observed that the international community has no choice but to stop the fascist Indian government from committing genocide in the held territory. Kashmiris he said cannot be left at the mercy of occupation forces. “The months long siege and communication blockade in Kashmir by India has is having a devastating impact on the lives and welfare of everyday Kashmiris”, Wani said adding that it was high time that the international community should pressurize Indian lift restrictions and ensure restoration of the fundamental rights and privileges to Kashmiris. “The messy situation in the troubled region demands that the United Nations must authorize an effective intervention to provide protection and security to the people of Kashmir”, he added.

Referring to the genesis of Kashmir dispute the JKNF leader said that the UN has a legal and moral responsibility to address the conflict in line with the resolutions that guarantee right of self-determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Inviting the UN secretary to visit the Kashmiri refugees camps in Azad Kashmir, the JKNF leader said that the UN chief must spare a few hours out of his busy schedule to visit the refugee camps on this side of the ceasefire line to get a real feel of the woeful plight of thousands of Kashmiri divided families who were forced to flee their homes by Indian occupation.
