UN intervention in Kashmir has become inevitable: Altaf Ahmad Bhat

Mirpur: Terming Kashmir as a festering wound of partition Veteran Hurriyat leader and social activist Altaf Ahmed Bhat has said that the political, human rights, economic and humanitarian crises in Indian occupied Kashmir have reached to epic proportions where direct intervention of the world body (UN) has become inevitable and legally justified.

Altaf Ahmad Bhat who is also convener of Jammu and Kashmir Salvation Movement (JKSM) made these assertions while addressing a function organized by Kashmir Orphan Relief Trust (KORT) here on Thursday. The function, which was held to mark the 14th anniversary of 2005 devastating earthquake, was attended by Core Commander Mongla Gen. Nadeem Zaki, GOC Mongla, AJK minister Chaudhry Rukhsar whereas donors, trustees and media men from England, Europe and Azad Kashmir were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion JKSM convener said that after the attempted annexation of Kashmir Modi led fascist regime has turned Kashmir into an open air jail where people have been deprived of the basic necessities of life. He said, “Kashmir valley is paralyzed under relentless siege for last 10 weeks, people are being trampled down under the jackboots and their fundamental rights have been usurped by the India’s fascist regime by using all possible means of oppress and suppression”. In addition to severe humanitarian crisis he said that the punitive siege was now taking a heavy toll on Kashmir’s fragile economy. He said due to the continued lockdown key sectors of Kashmir’s economy particularly tourism and fruit industry have suffered immense losses over the past two months.

Urging international community to realize its responsibilities viz-a-viz the impending crisis looming large over the region he said that it was high time that the world community should fulfill its obligations regarding the peaceful settlement of Kashmir dispute. Highlighting the plight of divided Kashmiri families he said, “Millions of Kashmiris living in Pakistan or other parts of the world have been cut off from their loved ones for past 65 days”. He said that divided families don’t even have any idea as what has happened to their near and dear ones who have been reeling under suffocating siege in Indian held territory of Jammu and Kashmir since 5th of August.

Terming Pakistan as the only hope for Kashmiris Bhat said that the people of Indian occupied Kashmir were looking towards Pakistan. Urging the incumbent government to pursue a proactive policy on Kashmir he said that despite oppression and suppression India has miserably failed to subdue Kashmiris. Citing the grim humanitarian situation in IoK he said that Kashmiris believe that Pakistan would not hesitate in going the extra mile to save them from any eventuality.

Bhat also paid tribute to KORT for its unprecedented services and upliftment of local community.
